PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing 1,2,4- butanetricarboxylic acid at high selectivity and high yield. SOLUTION: 1,2,4-Butanetricarboxylic acid is obtained by subjecting 2-methylene diglutarate to cyanolysis in the presence of CN-type strongly basic anion exchange resin as a catalyst and then by hydrolyzing the resultant 2- cyanomethyl diglutarate.
