The device has a sensor (38) responding to a vehicle deceleration, and a mechanical break (18) i.e. wedge brake, arranged functionally between the sensor and a belt roller, where the break is self-energized. Balls (24) are provided in openings of a brake disk (20) and/or in openings of a braking component (26), where a bottom of the openings is increased over a length of the openings. The mechanical break includes a rotatable disk and a brake body i.e. plate, that is radially movable. A spring (45) locks the rotatable disk against a belt strap extension direction.
