A spacer, suitable for spacing sheets of glass or other material, comprise a pad element having a portion made of tacky material and another portion made of a substantially non-tacky material, at least part of the tacky portion being located at a face of the pad and at least part of the non-tacky portion being located at an edge of the pad such that the pad element is sufficiently flexible that the non-tacky portion can be bent out of the plane which the tacky portion occupies i.e. the pad element is removable by lifting a finger. The spacer may be made by applying stripes of a first material to a face of a carrier medium and a layer of a second material over the face of the carrier medium, the first material being tacky or non-tacky and the second material being correspondingly non-tacky or tacky. Alternatively tacky material may be applied to a carrier medium and then sections of the tacky material treated to make it non-tacky. The substrate formed by the tacky and non-tacky materials may be (a) cut into a plurality of strips of a width corresponding to the width of the spacers being produced and /or (b) cut into spacer size lengths. Adjacent strips formed by steps (a) and (b) may be provided with interconnecting bridges which are then wound into a roll and bobbins wound with strips of material may be provided by unwinding a strip of material from the roll thus breaking bridges. |
