HANDOFF METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TERMINAL BASED ON EFFICIENT SET MANAGEMENT IN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A handoff method in accordance with efficient set management of a terminal and a device thereof are provided to increase a pilot search ratio for a base station of a neighbor set, thereby enabling idle handoff to be performed or a paging message for call connection to be received. Pilots of at least more than one base station of a neighbor set and one base station of an active set of a terminal are searched(800). It is checked whether a base station having larger energy than pilot energy of the active set exists among the base stations of the searched neighbor set(810). If so, it is confirmed whether PN(Pseudo Noise) offsets of the base stations of the neighbor set are the same as PN offsets of base stations existing in an active set list(820). If so, a difference between the current time and a time when a previous active set was a final active set is obtained(830). If the difference is larger than reference time, it is confirmed that the pilot energy of the active set is less than a reference value, and handoff is performed to the base stations of the neighbor set(840,870).
