A battery charger capable of charging either nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries, and capable of operating on sources of AC or DC power. The apparatus consists of a battery, a charging circuit and a controller. The charging circuit includes a controlled switch which connect and disconnects the battery from the charging current. The charging circuit is controlled to discontinue charging if any of the power source, the battery, the switch means between the battery and the charging circuit, the control circuit or the microcontroller malfunctions.
