The method involves measuring a periodic distance between transmission and reception of radio signals, and determining a linear distance between transceivers (13, 14) from the periodic distance. Isolation of a train (1) is determined during installation of the transceivers into the train by the linear distances determined at different time points, where one of the transceivers automatically determines whether the other transceiver belongs to the same train as the former transceiver by the linear distances. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring a train with multiple carriages, by a transceiver.
