PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide systems and methods for manipulating micro-objects to assemble micro-assemblies.SOLUTION: An electric field generator is configured to generate a force field of an electric or magnetic field varying in both space and time and allowed to pass a substrate not permanently affixed to the electric field generator, and is configured to manipulate, on the substrate, micro-objects which are typically microns to hundreds of microns in size. The micro-objects are positioned and oriented on the substrate while keeping a selected relationship to each other. After finally positioned and oriented, the micro-objects undergo post-processing for forming micro-assemblies.
