PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a credit card reading device and a credit card reading method for reducing the processing load of a device and the transfer load of a data transfer path, and for surely generating an image whose characters and background are discriminated on a credit card. SOLUTION: A printer 10 with an image reading sensor is provided with an image reading sensor 44 for reading a credit card C to be conveyed on a card conveyance path in color and an image data generating part(binary image generating part 70 or gray scale image generating part 80) for generating image data based on a card image read by the image reading sensor 44. This image data generating part prepares a histogram based on a pre-scan image acquired from a credit card C by pre-scanning, and drives the image reading sensor 44 according to the histogram to operate main scanning.
