Master cylinder for hydraulically-operated automotive brake or clutch

The cylinder (1) is for a hydraulically-operated automotive clutch or brake, being held in position, preferably on a pedal bracket (2) by screws. Its piston rod is coupled between a pedal and a piston working in the housing (3), the piston and housing forming a variable-volume pressure chamber. One or more centring aids (11a) are provided between the housing and the pedal bracket, and the screws (9) securing the cylinder in place are self-tapping. The centring aid can be on the housing, fitting closely in a mating bore (13) in the bracket, and can typically consist of a round boss. The free end of the boss can have a truncated-cone portion, onto which a cylindrical intermediate one joins. The boss can be roughly midway between the drillings (7, 8) in the housing, and in a zone where the centre of gravity of the cylinder is situated.
