PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a method for manufacturing an aqueous dispersion of hollow polymer particles that is capable of manufacturing efficiently the aqueous dispersion containing the hollow polymer particles having a high void volume while inhibiting the occurrence of agglomerate at the time of manufacturing. SOLUTION: The manufacturing of the hollow polymer particles having the voids, which are formed by forming a polymer particle having a structure of at least two layers consisting of a core polymer containing relatively more acidic groups and of an outer layer polymer surrounding it and then by neutralizing at least a part of the acidic groups contained in the above core polymer, is characterized in that the core polymer is prepared by using a predetermined quantity of a surfactant having a structure expressed by the formula (1): R-O-(CH2CH2O)n-SO3M (wherein, R is an 8-20C alkyl or alkenyl group; M is an alkali metal ion or ammonium ion; and (n) is an integer of 5-40).
