A method for controlling an automatic transmission is provided to prevent an overrun of an engine by compensating for a duty control signal using a release element and a coupling element. A speed shift instruction is delivered to an ECU(S100). The ECU(Engine Control Unit) outputs a duty control signal to a release element and a coupling element(S110). Whether an overrun of an engine occurs is determined, when a speed shift process is performed while a vehicle is running(S120). When the overrun occurs, a compensated duty control signal is outputted to the release element and the coupling element(S130). After the overrun, the ECU outputs the duty control signal to the release element. During the duty control signal outputting process, the compensated duty control signal increases slopes of the duty control signals with respect to the release element and the coupling element.
