PURPOSE: A timing error compensating apparatus in a channel modem for a satellite communication system is provided to detect a data in an exact timing and demodulate it. CONSTITUTION: A data converter(51) performs a Z inversion about I, Q demodulation data. A data size generator(52) generates a size data of the converted data. A data comparing part(53) compares the data applied from the data converter with the I, Q demodulation data, and outputs a data of the difference. A data multiplier(54) processes a multiplication of the data applied from the comparing part and a ref. size data. A ref. data determining part(55) determines the ref. data of the I, Q demodulation data. A ref. data converter(56) performs a Z inversion about the determined ref. data. A ref. data size generator(57) generates a size data of the converted ref. data. A ref. data comparing part(58) compares the data applied from the ref. data converter with the determined ref. data. A ref. data multiplier(59) processes a multiplication of the compared ref. data and the size data. A timing error detector(60) compares a size of the data applied from the data multiplier with that of the data from the ref. data multiplier, and detects a timing error component. A timing error compensator compensates the detected timing error on the basis of the set timing error counting and the ref. timing counting, and outputs it. Thereby, an error rate of the data due to a timing error is reduced.
