<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface modifying method of a glass base material by which an optional shape or pattern is provided on an optional position of the glass base material with high precision and a surface modified glass base material capable of developing a refractive index different positional-selectively. <P>SOLUTION: The surface of the glass base material is modified by interposing a cation donor containing ≥1 wt.% cation forming oxide having ≤126 kJ/mol single bond strength expressed in terms of oxide and applying a thermal poling treatment on the glass base material. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
