PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lay out one or more isotope production rods in a fuel bundle. SOLUTION: An illustrative embodiment of the present invention is intended for the layout of one or more isotope production rods (100) in the fuel bundle (10). The layout may be based on any or their combination of numerous factors such as a relative position of a core monitor, a type of a radioisotope being produced, the half-lives, or the duration of decay, of the radioisotope, a neutron absorption factor of a target isotope to produce the radioisotopes, a desired specific activity of the radioisotope being produced, a quantity of neutron flux in various domains of the fuel bundle (10) and a duration when the target isotope/the radioisotope is expected to remain in a fission reactor until it is removed (or harvested).
