<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which a carriage is not brought into contact with a switching lever during image recording, with no possibility of bringing a trouble to an image recording operation, even when the switching lever for switching power transmission to a plurality of actuating positions is arranged within a range of the image recording operation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When an LF motor 71 is normally rotated, a contact part 84a of the switching lever 84 is held at a lever position PS3 in Fig.15(a). When the contact part 84a is positioned at the lever position PS3, as it is positioned out of a moving path of the carriage 14, there exists no possibility of bringing the carriage 14 into contact with the contact part 84a during image recording.
