For the operation of a sewing machine with a feed for an elastic band, the elastic band (43) is delivered by a supply unit (1) with an accurate tension to the band feed/cutter unit (5). The elastic band feed/cutter unit is moved into the stitching zone before or at the start of sewing, to shoot the elastic band into the presser foot (4) or its zone, and the feed/cutter unit is retracted after insertion and/or after sewing starts. The elastic band tension is controlled during stitching, and the feed/cutter unit is returned to sever the elastic band after sewing and the cut end is clamped. The sewing machine, for stitching an elastic band, moves the band feed/cutting unit into and out of the stitching zone to feed the band and then cut the end of the stitched band at the fabric. The elastic band feed/cutting unit is moved into and out of the field of view of the sewing machine user. The elastic band feed/cutting unit moves on a reciprocating linear path, through at least one piston/cylinder unit (8). The band feed/cutter can move in and out on a rotating swing movement path. The elastic band supply is positioned over the presser foot. The feed/cutter has a feed roller (16) to move the elastic band, powered by a pneumatic rotating cylinder.
