A safety system (10) for use on a load platform (12) consists of a plurality of upstanding arms (14) attached to the platform (12) and an impact-resistant sheet (16) which extends between the arms (14). The arms (14) can be pivoted relative to the platform (12) between a first position in which the arms (14) are substantially normal to the plane of the platform (12) such that the sheet (16) forms a side wall and, a second position in which the arms (14) can be pivoted away from the normal such that the arms (14) extend outwardly away from the platform (12) and the sheet (16) forms a skirt which can catch objects which fall off the platform (12). The platform may comprise the flat bed of a lorry (figure 1C), and the impact resistant sheet may comprise a polypropylene mesh. Also disclosed are safety systems comprising releasable upstanding arms (figure 6A) and crossbars (figure 6C) rather than the impact-resistant sheet. |
