PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manage an ink residual amount without installing a rewritable storage medium in a cartridge. SOLUTION: Using the cartridge 50 which has a bar code seal 54 for expressing a serial number which is a peculiar product number for every cartridge and a small projection 56, the small projection 56 is eliminated when the cartridge 50 is loaded in a cartridge loading unit 60 for the first time. Thereby, it can be judged whether the cartridge 50 is a new article according to the presence or absence of the small projection 56. When the new cartridge is loaded, the serial number of the cartridge 50 and the ink residual amount are memorized in a flash memory installed in an inkjet printer. When the cartridge which is not new is loaded, the ink residual amount memorized in the flash memory can be updated.
