PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve ranging precision by obtaining always an appropriate correlation calculation result when synthesizing pixel output from each pixel row. SOLUTION: A sensor row composing an AF sensor is composed of three pixel rows for which a plurality of sensor pixels are arranged. If the first and second pixel rows bear similarity by detection and the same defocus amount, an image deviation amount is calculated by synthesizing signals of respective pixel rows to perform correlation calculation. If the second and third pixel rows bear similarity by detection and the same defocus amount, an image deviation amount is calculated by synthesizing signals of respective pixel rows to perform correlation calculation. Then, synthesis of each pixel row signal is performed by finding a correlation value of which the maximum correlation is formed between two pixel rows, finding a shift amount from the correlation value and alternately taking out each pixel row signal one pixel by one pixel after shifting one pixel row signal in accordance with the shift amount.
