In a nuclear reactor of the kind in which particles are circulated through a reaction zone and through a separate cooling zone, the particles are porous and comprise fissile material and heat carrying material and are of a size between 50 and 300 microns, the porosity being such as to permit the escape of any gaseous reaction products formed within the particles during operation. The heat carrying material should be chemically indifferent, have a neutron captive cross section of less than 0À10 bains, and have a melting point in excess of 1000‹C. Bismuth, magnesium, lead, phosphorus, silicon, zirconium, aluminium, or oxides or other compounds of these elements are suitable, in particular bismuth trioxide, magnesium oxide, silica, magnesium silicate, zirconium silicate, or magnesium pyrophosphate. The particles may also contain breeder material or moderator material, e.g. beryllium oxide or carbide. The fissile material may be present as an oxide or carbide of the metal.
