<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform belt control while preventing the regulating rib of an endless belt from being damaged. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has: the endless belt 9 stretched over a plurality of rollers; the rib 9R disposed on the belt and having a joint T; a driving means 13 driving the belt 9; a detection means 16 detecting the joint T; and a control means for controlling the driving means.
