PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing alcohols from an ester or a lactone under a comparatively mild condition in high yield and in high catalytic efficiency. SOLUTION: The method for producing the alcohols comprises reducing the ester or the lactone with hydrogen by using a complex represented by general formula (1): Ru(H)(η1-BH<SB>4</SB>)(L<SB>P</SB><SP>1</SP>)(L<SB>N</SB><SP>2</SP>) (wherein, L<SB>P</SB><SP>1</SP>is a bisphosphine ligand; and L<SB>N</SB><SP>2</SP>is a diamine ligand) as a catalyst.
