PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically detect a press-in clearance between an abutting surface of a cylinder head and the end faces of valve seats pressed into the cylinder head. SOLUTION: A valve seat press-in clearance detecting device for detecting a clearance between an abutting surface of a cylinder head 2 and the end faces of valve seats 6, 8 pressed into a press-in hole of the cylinder head 2 has measuring heads 15a, 15b arranged to be axially movable to scan along the center axes of the valve seats 6, 8 and provided with light sources irradiating light radially outward toward measured surfaces, and light receiving elements for receiving reflected light from the measured surfaces. The respective measuring heads 15a, 15b are axially moved by moving means 14a, 14b. The presence and dimension of the clearance are obtained on the basis of signals from the light receiving elements while moving the respective measuring heads 15a, 15b to scan.
