PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel silencer for a woodwind instrument that improves silencing performance, gives an improved natural feeling of blowing, and takes sufficient countermeasures against moisture. SOLUTION: The silencer for the woodwind instrument which generates a sound by using a reed has a housing which includes a sound hole of the musical instrument. The depth of the housing is smaller than the width of the housing, which is divided to constitute a right shell 1 and a left shell 12 which can freely be opened and closed. Sound absorbing layers are arranged on internal surfaces of the left and the right shells 1 and 12, and a fixable mechanism for the musical instrument is provided so that the sound hole of an opening end of the musical instrument may be positioned nearly in the center of the inside of the housing and in wide space. The left and the right shells 1 and 12 are provided with hand holes such that when the right hand and the left hand of a player are put in from outside the housing, the inside of the housing is sealed without any gap, and the hand holes are made of elastic members.
