PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet size detecting mechanism excellent in durability and operability and capable of reducing a space for a mechanical structure wherein a complicated mechanical structure is not required. SOLUTION: As illustrated in Fig.2, in the sheet size detecting mechanism, a first permanent magnet 1a is provided in a sheet size selection member 1 and a second permanent magnet 9 is provided at a device body side. It is possible to detect sheet size and to determine whether a sheet storage cassette is mounted or not by detecting magnetic fields of both the permanent magnets by a Hall element IC6.
