A method for compensating the brightness variation of a video sequence is provided to perform the global brightness variation compensation of a DC image, and perform the local brightness variation compensation and motion compensation of the DC image by using high-speed motion estimation, thereby reducing a calculation process for motion estimation and compensation for the video sequence greatly. A method for compensating the brightness variation of a video sequence comprises the following steps of: determining whether to apply a brightness variation model by using a histogram difference between continuous frames; extracting a DC(Direct Current) image from an input frame to perform the global brightness variation compensation of the DC image if the application of the brightness variation model is determined; and performing the local motion compensation for the image, of which the global brightness variation compensation is performed, by using high-speed motion estimation(S18,S20).
