PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video decoding method and an apparatus therefor.SOLUTION: A video decoding method comprises the steps of: obtaining a split transformation flag from a bit stream in order to determine a transformation unit for inverse conversion processing; obtaining at least one of transformation units from a coding unit based on the split transformation flag; determining a context model for arithmetic decoding of a transformation unit effective coefficient flag indicating whether a non-zero transformation coefficient is existing or not in a current transformation unit in the above mentioned at least one of transformation units, according to a fact that transformation depth of the transformation unit is determined to be or not to be a same with a prescribed value, without using the transformation unit size; and performing arithmetic decoding of the transformation unit effective coefficient flag based on the determined context model.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 27
