<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wastewater treatment system capable of carrying out activated sludge treatment while keeping the MLSS concentration of an activated sludge treatment tank high, and a wastewater treatment method. <P>SOLUTION: The wastewater treatment system 10 comprises an initial settling basin 50 for carrying out solid-liquid separation of water to be treated, the activated sludge treatment tank 12 for carrying out the activated sludge treatment of the water to be treated supplied from the initial settling basin 50, an atmospheric floatation apparatus 30 for concentrating sludge contained in a treated substance supplied from the activated sludge treatment tank 12, a final settling basin 24 for carrying out the solid-liquid separation of a separated liquid separating the concentrated sludge from the atmospheric floatation apparatus 30 and a concentrated sludge return line L7 for returning the sludge concentrated by the atmospheric floatation apparatus 30 to the activated sludge treatment tank 12. Since the atmospheric floatation apparatus 30 concentrates the sludge to return to the activated sludge treatment tank 12, the MLSS concentration of the activated sludge treatment tank 12 can be increased.
