An electrolyte for a lithium secondary battery, and a lithium secondary battery containing the electrolyte are provided to prevent the falling of voltage in case on the leaving alone of a lithium secondary battery at a high temperature for a long time. An electrolyte comprises a nonaqueous organic solvent which contains 10-20 vol% of a cyclic carbonate; a dinitrile-based compound; and a lithium salt. Preferably the cyclic carbonate is selected from the group consisting of ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, butylene carbonate, vinylene carbonate, vinyl ethylene carbonate, and their mixture. Preferably the dinitrile-based compound is represented by the formula 1, wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene group or a substituted or unsubstituted a cycloalkyl group, and the substituent is a halogen atom.
