A system for tracing copyright of contents and a control method thereof are provided to generates contents through an index file by which a user is able to search correspondent contents with a keyword corresponding to multimedia contents depending on a human, an object, time and space. A contents DB(20) stores multimedia contents, and an index file DB(30) stores an index file which includes an index for keyword search and the copyright information for the multimedia contents. A transaction history DB(10) stores inheritance history of the copyright and the transaction history of the multimedia contents. A service sever(40) not only supports the download of the contents streaming, which is stored at the contents DB, to a user computer(60), but also generates the index file at which the copyright for the contents and stores the index file at the index file DB. In addition, the service sever generates an index file which includes a new copyright for the contents depending on inheritance and stores the index file at the index file DB.
