The method involves transmitting data (16) by a primary communication participant (14) in a network (10) to communication participants (12, 18). A comparison of the data with reference data (20) is carried out by the communication participants. An address (22) is allocated based on a result of the comparison in one of the communication participants. The data is subsequently transmitted to the participants (12, 18) in the network, and is modified in connection with the transmission of the data to the subsequent communication participant (12).
