Method for coating steel with a layer of bright chromium by vapour deposition whereby the steel is heated in a non-oxidising atmos at is not 482 degrees C and then passed through a chamber at a pressure of 0.0001-0.03 mm of Hg of a mixt. of N2 and H2, in which a thickness of chromium >0.01 inch is applied to >=1 face by vapour deposition. In prior art much lower pressures were necessary. The invention enables a continuous process to be carried out rather than a batch process since the vacuum seal does not have to be so good as is necessary with pressures of 10-4m of Hg. Heating can also be more uniform.
|
