1399134 Phosphonic acid esters CIBAGEIGY AG 30 June 1972 [5 July 1971] 30836/72 Heading C2P [Also in Division C3] Phosphorus-containing compounds are prepared by reacting (1) a phosphonic acid ester of the formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> each denote C 1-4 alkyl, with (2) an alcohol of the formula X-OH wherein X denotes C 2-6 hydroxyalkyl, with the b.p. of the alcohol of the formula R-OH, which is liberated during the reaction, being at least 30‹ C. below the b.p. of the alcohol X-OH, and (3) a C 2-4 epoxide. The esterification is preferably carried out in the presence of alkali metal oxides, alkaline earth metal oxides or alkaline earth metal hydroxides. The molar ratio of phosphonic acid ester : alcohol is preferably 2 : 1 to 1 : 3. In specific examples methanephosphonic acid dimethyl ester is reacted with (A and B) glycerine and subseqently propylene oxide, (C) glycerine and subsequently propylene oxide and ethylene oxide, and (F) ethylene glycol and subsequently propylene oxide and diethylethanephosphonate is reacted with (D) glycerine and subsequently propylene oxide. The phosphorus-containing compounds may be used to flameproof polyurethane foams (see Division C3). |
