Controlled cooling from rolling heat of double-refined steel or fine wire is effected by passing the rolled stock through a coolant system comprising a staggered series of cooling pipes. Each cooling pipe, including the inflow funnel leading to it, is positioned in a trough-like vessel filled with water. The arrangement prevents the infiltration of harmful air through the spraying nozzles into the coolant system.
