<p>1390381 Hydrogenating fatty oils BLAWKNOX CHEMICAL PLANTS Inc 21 Feb 1972 [24 Feb 1971 10 June 1971] 7946/72 Heading C5C In a process for the continuous hydrogenation of fatty oil in the presence of a catalyst, the hydrogen is metered into the reaction zone at spaced intervals along the reaction zone without external mechanical agitation, in such a manner that there is no back-mixing, and the Baker flow parameter is greater than 420. The Baker flow parameter is defined by the formula A P = cross-sectional area of pipe, P G = density of gas, P L = density of liquid, # = surface tension of liquid, and Á L = viscosity of liquid. Preferably, the total quantity of hydrogen supplied is no more than 10% greater than the total quantity consumed. This gives good selectivity, with a large degree of hydrogenation of polyunsaturates, but little of oleic acid radicals. In the examples a soya-bean oil is hydrogenated over a catalyst of nickel supported on kieselguhr, but reference is also made to rapeseed oil, mustard oil, cotton-seed oil, peanut oil, rubber-seed oil, corn oil, wheat-germ oil, linseed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, lard and tallow, and as catalysts copper, platinum, palladium and cobalt, unsupported or supported on charcoal, silica, kieselghur or silica gel, and the homogeneous catalysts of U.S.A.
