Characterisation of liquid samples e.g. in clinical chemical and nuclear medical laboratories, is carried out by mixing each sample with a number of radionuclides, the energy spectrum of the radiation emitted by the sample being processed for the determination of the sample characteristic. Method associates the identification with the sample and not with the vessel contg. it, so that the sample may be subdivided as often as desired. The quantity of radionuclides added is too small to effect any of the analyses carried out. The process can be extended to include radioactive samples, provided an entirely different energy spectrum is used for sample identification to that arising from the sample itself.
