The hay making machine is tractor drawn and has the rotating pick-up blades supported by a pair of running wheels (36) rotating about a horizontal axle (37). The distance between the centres of the running wheels is greater than the distance between their common axis and that of the hinge arm on which they are mounted. The wheels are mounted on different sides of the central axis of the gear drive arrangement which is situated above and between the hinged arms (35). In an alternate system the running wheels may be coupled by a separate common axle, rather than both wheels being coupled to the spinner-disc cross beam.
