Meterer for cut tobacco to form a tobacco fleece or strand for prodn. of cigarettes or cigars has a damming shaft forming a defined tobacco supply and controllable removers for the tobacco from the shaft. The shaft has an outlet opening which is variable in dependence on the layer height of the removed amt. of tobacco. Preferably the shaft has a pivotable flap, which determines the cross section of the opening. An angular position sensor pivots about a stationary point, and has one shank acted on by the removed amt. of tobacco and the other actuating the flap. The stripped-off amt. of excess tobacco can fall back between the two angle levers, without loading the feeler shank and falsifying the sensing of the layer height.
