Railway or hover vehicle electromagnet guidance system - with paired poles engaging rail head laterally inside and on top

The purpose is to provide an electromagnetic system for lateral guidance and/or hover travel on normal type railway tracks, without undesirable loss of eddy current being involved. The poles of a pair of magnets are used to generate magnetic lateral forces on the rail head, engaging laterally inside and on top, and magnetically return-circuited by means of an iron yoke. The poles may be mounted only laterally one behind the other, with a travelling field flowing through the magnetic coils. Total lift forces for hovering may be generated at the normal railway track rail head. The magnets may embrace the rail head in horse-shoe fashion from above, with the ends below the lower side, and they may be in hinged halves for folding sideways and upwards when required.
