A cigarette marking machine in which a paper strip travels over rollers to an adhesive applicator then on to a cutting drum from which the cut strips are wrapped around filter pieces while carried by further drums, has a bend around which the paper travels after leaving the adhesive applicator, where the paper is tested for leaks or weaknesses. At this bend, the paper passes over a guide surface with suction holes connected to a pressure measuring device. When the suction rises, indicating a leak, a pressure switch operates and cuts off the drive motor for the following stages. In an alternative design, the testing device uses a suction roller instead of the bend.
