The switching mechanism is used for providing railway vehicles with independent support structure and a steering system by means of which the direction of the vehicle is changed by an actuating system on the vehicle. The switch in the track is actuated by a roller with flexible coating which is moved vertically on the vehicle. The branched track has a channel whose side walls have guide tracks which reach into the channel at different depths. One of these guide tracks guides the vehicle into the desired direction when the roller runs along the given guide track. A switching section is provided before and after the channel.
