The feeding system moves transportation containers for files into a vertical chain conveyor, having rake-like carriers for the containers. The feeder has a horizontally moveable container retained. The retainer has recesses for the passage of the carriers on the chain. A stop unit locks the retainer in its transfer position in front of the conveyors chain, this causing the drive for the chain to be switched-on. The chain follows rollers which are fitted in positions suitable for providing guidance.
