A process for splitting acetals and hemi-acetals in the form of a hydrolysis or alcoholysis reaction carried out in a liquid medium in the presence of a sulfonic acid ion exchange resin on the acid side, preferably at a temperature within the range of 60 DEG to 140 DEG C. and at a pressure within the range of 1 to 12 atmospheres.
