The lift carriage (20) has a frame (22) which travels along the rails (16, 18) mounted on the wall. The frame carries a first support roller (31) which runs along the top of the uppermost rail (16) and is positioned nearer the leading side of the frame than a second support roller (32) which runs on top of the lower rail and is positioned near the trailing side of the frame as it approaches the upward inclined sections of the rails on the stairs. A counter-roller (34) runs along the lower edge of the top rail whereby the line (L) joining the axles of the first roller (31) and the counter roller (34) forms an angle of x/2 with the vertical and is equal to half the angle of inclination (x) of the rail track. An improved, smoother guidance system thereby results.
