1504866 Methane production IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 May 1975 [3 June 1974 4 Sept 1974] 24506/74 and 38633/74 Heading C5E A process for the production of a methanecontaining gas comprises reacting, at an outlet temperature of at least 500‹ C., a gas comprising carbon oxides and hydrogen over a catalyst comprising the product of thermal decomposition and reduction of a compound containing an oxide of divalent nickel and/or cobalt and/or iron, a difficultly reducible (defined) oxide of at least one trivalent metal, hydroxyl ions, divalent anions, and water. Suitable catalysts are disclosed in Specification 1,336,866. The starting gas may be made by partial oxidation of a carbonaceous feedstock such as coal, coke, heavy oil, vaporisable oils, and normally gaseous hydrocarbons having a higher molecular weight than methane, and may be subjected to a CO shift reaction before the methanation stage. The first methanation stage, which is preferably at an outlet temperature of 600-900‹ C., may be followed by one or more conventional methanation stages at outlet temperatures of 250-400‹ C., to produce a substitute natural gas. Alternatively, the first methanation stage may be followed by a lower temperature methanation stage at an outlet temperature of 500-850‹ C. over a catalyst as specified above. Various catalyst production and gas purification processes are described. |
