The electrolytic cell may include a tank 11 having a bottom and at least one upstanding marginal side wall, e.g. concentric polygonal outer and inner walls 12, 16, lined at least on the inner surface(s) with an insoluble anode 13; a cathode 24 comprising an elongate cage (26), Fig. 3 (not shown) secured to a vertical shaft 17 rotatably mounted e.g. in bearings 18 in the tank centre to be concentrically spaced from the anode; and drive means, e.g. lever arm 19 connected by a lever (21), Fig. 4 (not shown), to a pitman wheel (22) driven by a motor (23), to rotate the shaft back and forth to effect oscillation of the cathode within the tank. The cathode may comprise a plurality of metal plates 28 received in slots (30) in the cage frame depending from supports (27), electrical connection with the shaft being by conductors 29; the shaft may be provided with a commutator 31 connecting through a brush device to the negative of the D.C. source. The anode(s) 13, e.g. of 8% Sb-92% Pb alloy, may be connected to the D.C. source by conductor(s) 14. Electrolyte, e.g. sulphuric acid for copper oxide slurry, may be fed through conduit 33 into the tank to overflow via outlet 34. The cathode plates 28 may be provided with fins 37 for agitating the electrolyte. A batch of cells with recycling of electrolyte may be used.</p>
