The instrument has a rotor which can swing about an output axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation over at least a limited angle. The rotor (15) carries a permanent magnet ring (18) uniformly radially magnetised over its whole periphery. Its surface is everywhere at the same distance from the rotor axis (20). Two windings (25) are provided in the case, diametrically opposite to each other, near the rotor (15). When supplied with d.c. current they interact with the magnetic field generated by the magnet ring (18) and apply a torque to it about the first output axis (22).
