Fluorescent whiteners (I or II; R = H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, R1, R2 = H, alkyl, alkoxy, halo, R3, R4 = H, alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, halo, dialkylamino, alkanoylamino, Ph, substituted Ph) using substituted benzofurans, benzothiophens and naphthofurans were prepd. and were esp. useful for whitening fiber, film, paper, vanish, plastics, etc. owing to excellent stability to blue fluoresence, light, chloride-type bleaching agent and high temp. by 0.005-0.5wt.% content.
