Prepn. of aralkylamines of formula (I) by reacting a sec. amine of formula (II) with a carbonyl cpd. of formula (III) is effected in presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst consisting of (a) platinum, (b) zinc, cadmium, manganese and/or a rare earth metal oxide, on (c) an inert carrier. (R1 is H, 1-10C aliphatic gp., 5-7C cycloaliphatic gp. or 1-6C alkoxy; A is -(CHX5)n-, -CHX6-N(X7)-CHX8- or -CHX9-O-CHX10-; R2-R4 and X1-X10 are H or 1-4C alkyl; n is 2, 3 or 4; the dotted line in (III) is an optional double bond).
