The mechanism is intended for arranging objects (2), such as bags, which are fed in mutually overlapping pattern on a continuously moving conveyor belt (1,4) into groups. Below the discharge end (9) of this conveyor (1,4), a second belt conveyor (10) moves in opposite direction. This end (9) and the second conveyor (10) are longitudinally movable relative to one another such that the end passes to and fro over the belt (10). The belt (10) stops during the forward movement of the discharge end (9), and is driven whilst this end returns. The belt (10) transfers the objects to a third belt (11) leading to the stacking station (12-14).
